GREENSBORO, N.C. — With 16 seconds remaining in regulation, UNC Greensboro's Lauren Lopez placed a shot into the top-left corner of the goal off a free kick to send the Spartans to 1-0 win over the Davidson women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference action.

Davidson fell to 9-5-3 overall and 7-3-0 in league play as it remained in third place in the SoCon.

With the win, UNCG ran its overall mark to 14-4-1 and continued its run through the league with a perfect 9-0-1 to win the regular-season conference title for the third straight year. The Spartans become the first team in league history to win the regular-season title outright three years in a row.

A match-up of two teams that had already clinched home quarterfinal round games for next Sunday, the game was well-played throughout. With 40 seconds to play, a foul was called that appeared to be just inside of the box. However, the official ruled that contact took place just outside the 18-yard line to give UNCG a free kick. The clock continued to run as Davidson set up its five-person wall.

On the restart, Kristin Player touched to Kelly Attayek, who quickly touched as Lopez came forward. The junior hooked the ball into the top-left corner, just inside the near post, to give the Spartans the only goal of the match.

The shots in the match were even at 8-8, while UNCG had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks, but could not capitalize on any of them.

Freshman goalkeeper Jessie Baxa had five saves, while Kelsey Kearney of UNCG had four saves to earn her eight shutout of the season, fifth-most in school history and the most by a Spartan freshman.

The Wildcats have one more regular-season league when they head to Statesboro, Ga. to play Georgia Southern on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 2 p.m.
