BOONE, N.C. – In a tightly contested match, Appalachian State held off a late Davidson charge to edge the Wildcats, 5-2, in non-conference action Thursday at the App State Tennis Courts.
The Wildcats drop to 5-3 on the spring, while App State improves to 5-6.
The Mountaineers claimed the crucial doubles' point with wins on court two and three, respectively, to take the early 1-0 lead. Davidson's top duo of Savanna Kollock and Bryson Langford were up 4-3 at the top spot when the point was decided.
Davidson's points came from Keri Rothenberg and Ellie Hammond.
Rothenberg, a freshman from Wilmette, Ill., remained perfect in dual action improving to 5-0 with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ruby Broadbent.
Shortly after, Hammond continued her strong play with a straight-set (6-3, 6-3) win of her own over Taya Powell at the No. 3 spot.
Despite the setback, Olivia Hooper battled in the final singles match before coming up just short in a third-set tiebreaker, 7-5, 5-7, 10-12.
