DAVIDSON, N.C. – After 16 days in between matches due to winter storms, Davidson returned to the courts in impressive fashion Sunday defeating in-state foe UNCG, 6-1, inside the Knobloch Tennis Center.
The win lifts the Wildcats to 2-0 on the young season, while the Spartans fall to 0-5.
"We came out very strong and were successful implementing our plans," said head coach Susanne Depka. "UNCG came back in a few matches, but we were able to keep pressing and pull them out."
For the second straight contest, Davidson grabbed the early 1-0 advantage thanks to sweeping the doubles competition.
The duo of Ellie Hammond and Charlotte Calderwood cruised to a 6-1 victory on court two. Shortly after, the Wildcats got 6-3 wins from Savanna Kollock and Bryson Langford at the top spot and Olivia Hooper and Keri Rothenberg at No. 3.
Three of the six singles matches went the distance with Kollock (6-2, 3-6, 6-4) and Langford (7-5, 2-6, 7-6) winning three-setters at the top two positions, respectively.
"Mentally we need to continue to keep being courageous in tough and stressful moments. This will help us not only in the moment but in matches to come. I'm proud of our commitment to the process and energy and positive spirit today."
Hammond (6-1, 7-5), Calderwood (6-3, 6-4) and Rothenberg (6-3, 6-0) also improved their spring singles records to 2-0 with straight-set triumphs.
The Spartans' lone win came by way of three sets from Ivet Sala-Sanchez on court six.
