
Gritty Effort Lifts 'Cats Past VCU, 11-10

RICHMOND, Va. – In their third straight game that came down to the wire, the Davidson Wildcats relied on grit and tenacity to push past VCU 11-10 in Atlantic 10 lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon.
The win improves the 'Cats to 10-3 overall and 6-1 in A-10 play, while the victory also marks Davidson's seventh-straight, good for the program's longest win streak since 2014.
Wednesday's win would boil down to the final 15 minutes of play, when VCU came back from a four-goal deficit and tied the game, 8-8, with 14:40 on the clock.
Nearly five minutes later, Riley Cochrane caused a VCU turnover that immediately turned into a one-on-one situation for Jacqueline Callahan, in which the junior attacker converted for Davidson's ninth goal of the day.
Ultimately, VCU and Davidson went on to exchange two more goals apiece, but Jenna Skibbe's third and fourth goals of the game proved to be the difference in the one-goal victory.
Mary Claire Hendrick provided four caused turnovers for the Wildcats' defense, which finished with a 19-of-22 effort on clear attempts. In cage, Kayla Joyce made 11 saves as VCU out-shot the 'Cats 33-24.
The Wildcats led 6-4 at halftime thanks to a free position goal from Allie Hartnett and two early scores from Josie Lambert. Davidson held its largest lead of the day, 8-4, after back-to-back scores from Skibbe before VCU began its second half comeback.
