Wildcats Fall to Western Carolina

DAVIDSON - The Davidson women's tennis team battled to a 5-1 loss against Western Carolina in non-conference action Saturday on the Davidson Tennis Courts.Â
The loss moves the Wildcats to 2-1 on the young season, ahead of beginning any Atlantic 10 competition.Â
"Western Carolina is a great team and they attack very well," said head coach Susanne Depka. "They just out played us today. We fought hard until the end and had chances in a few matches to bring it closer. We have a lot of good lessons to learn from this match and will hopefully take them into tomorrow's match against UNC Greensboro."Â
The Catamounts earned the first team point on the day by winning in No. 1 doubles (6-2) and No. 3 doubles (6-2), leaving Bryson Langford and Ines Roti unfinished in their debut as a pair on court two in a heated 4-5 battle.Â
Charlotte Calderwood cruised to her first singles win of the season in a 6-2, 6-0 triumph in the No. 6 position earning what would be the 'Cats lone point on the day. Freshman Ellie Hammond was in the midst of a comeback on court two, taking the second set 6-1 after falling 6-2 in the opening bout, however WCU took wins at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 to clinch the match.Â
The Wildcats competed well with numerous athletes stepping up when needed with players missing from Saturday's line up.Â
