Pack Starts and Finish Strong, Hold off ‘Cats, 68-59

DAVIDSON, N.C. – NC State got 23 points and 13 rebounds from Khamil Pierre and closed on an 8-0 run to hold off Davidson, 68-59, in non-conference women's basketball action Sunday afternoon inside John M. Belk Arena.
After a Charlise Dunn triple made it a 60-59 game with 1:42 remaining, the Wolfpack would score the final eight points of the contest, highlighted by six straight from Zamareya Jones including their only trey of the second half with 33 seconds left.
Dunn finished with 21 points to go along with 8 boards for the 'Cats, who fall to 9-5 overall.
Kyra Bruyndoncx was the only other Davidson player in double figures with 13 points in 36 minutes of action.
NC State (9-4) held the 'Cats to just 2-of-19 shooting in the opening quarter while racing out to a 20-4 advantage.
Trailing 39-26 shortly after intermission, Davidson started to slowly chip away making it a three-point game on several occasions, including 49-46 on an Elena Alvarez Castellanos driving layup with 15 ticks left in the period.
In addition to their 13-4 spurt to get back in the game, the Wildcats shot 62.5 percent, including four 3-pointers in the third.
NC State, which finished with 42 points in the paint and held Davidson to just 35 percent shooting, got 19 points from Jones, while Zoe Brooks chipped in 14.

Davidson will take a 10-day break for the Holiday before resuming Atlantic 10 Conference play Wednesday, Dec. 31 at Loyola Chicago.
