BOONE, N.C. – Emilie Bessell scored a career-high 19 points and Charlise Dunn added 16 points and 9 rebounds to lead Davidson past Appalachian State, 74-55, in non-conference women's basketball action Wednesday evening inside the Holmes Convocation Center.
A native of Sydney, Australia, Bessell finished 6-of-7 from the floor and free-throw line en route to just her second career double-digit performance. Entering tonight's contest, the sophomore had only scored two points in each of the first three games this season.
Edina Strausz also scored in double figures with 12 points for the Wildcats, who torched the nets for 56 percent, including a 9-of-19 effort from deep.
In addition to starting 6-of-8 from the floor, the 'Cats grabbed control early with an 11-0 run to open up a 13-2 advantage. Appalachian State (2-1) would cut the deficit to 19-14 at the end of one.
Davidson (3-1), which led 35-28 at the break, held the Mountaineers without a field goal the final 9:48 of the opening half. App State managed to keep the game within reach by going 12-of-14 from the stripe in the quarter.
The 'Cats would hold their in-state foe to just 35.1 percent on the night.
After the Mountaineers made it a two-point game early in the third, the Wildcats responded with consecutive treys from Dunn and Katie Donovan sparking an 11-2 run to push the margin back to double digits.
Davidson's lead would grow to as many as 19 late in the fourth quarter.
