KINGSTON, R.I. — Despite career days from Wildcats Reed Bailey and Bobby Durkin, Rhode Island topped Davidson 92-90 in Atlantic 10 action Saturday afternoon, thanks to a go-ahead 3-pointer from Sebastian Thomas with 1.3 seconds to play.
Thomas's shot, which he lofted on the run and banked in off the glass, came seconds after a go-ahead putback from Bailey, who finished one rebound shy of a triple-double with career-highs of 30 points and 11 assists.
Durkin added a high of 28 points, including six 3-pointers, and also pulled down eight rebounds for the Wildcats, who fell to 12-6 overall and 2-3 in the A-10.
It was the fourth game-winning shot of the year from Thomas, who also hit decisive shots against Providence, Temple and George Mason.
The Wildcats used an 8-0 run, including two Durkin treys, in the first 1:21 of the second half to move ahead 55-50 and extended their lead to 66-56 with 15:55 left. But the Rams closed the gap with an 8-0 run of their own, then regained the lead at 85-83 following a David Fuchs dunk with 4:24 on the clock. Rhode Island led down the stretch until Bailey rebounded a Zach Laput miss and put the Wildcats on top 90-89 with 5.7 ticks left.
Following the Thomas shot, a Laput floor-length pass was tipped out of bounds with 0.3 on the clock. A tip-in attempt by Bailey then fell short at the buzzer.
The first half unfolded at a hectic pace, with the Rams (14-4, 3-3) emerging with a 50-47 lead after 20 minutes. The Wildcats shot 63 percent in the half, while the Rams shot 59 percent and 9-of-10 from 3-point range.
Thomas and David Green led the Rams with 22 points apiece, while Jaden House had 19, including 15 in the first half.
Each team finished with 21 assists and 44 points in the paint.
