DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson men's tennis team fought hard in a 4-3 loss to Gardner-Webb Saturday afternoon to open the 2024 season.
"The energy from the crowd tonight was amazing," said head coach Drew Barrett. "I want to thank everyone who came. It was an awesome environment for our guys. We lost a nail-biter 4-3, but we came out and competed really well. We have some good things to take from this as we start the season".
The Wildcats came out of double's action in fine fashion and ran away with the doubles point via No. 1 and No. 3 wins. Maxwell Kachkarov and Juan Camilo Perez Gongora in the number one spot took down the Bulldog's top pairing in a 6-2 win.
Luca Lovrich and Jerry Wang followed suit as they battled through a neck-and-neck first set to force a tiebreaker and inevitably earn an exciting 7-6 (9-7) win to clinch the doubles point for the Wildcats.
Two 'Cats would go on to earn a pair of straight-set victories at the No. 2 and No. 5 spots in Camilo Perez Gongora (6-4, 6-1) and Nico Pinzon (6-4, 6-1) to put Davidson in a position to clinch the match point.
Both Udday Singh in the No. 1 spot and Sebastian Carpio Moran in the No. 3 spot pushed their matches to a third set but came up short in 6-1, 4-6, 3-6 and 1-6, 7-6, 1-6 decisions. The Bulldogs would prompt a comeback taking two-set victories on courts four and six to secure the match point.
