Wildcats Fall to Richmond at Home

DAVIDSON – League-leading Richmond held off Davidson 59-54 in Atlantic 10 women's basketball action Wednesday evening inside John M. Belk Arena.
The setback drops the Wildcats to 13-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play, while the Spiders move to 16-3 and remain unbeaten in the A-10 at 6-0.
Elle Sutphin was the lone Davidson player in double figures with 15 points. Three others added nine each, including Issy Morgan, who also contributed eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Millie Prior had nine points and 12 boards.
Trailing by as many as seven midway through the fourth, the Wildcats chipped away and got to within a possession multiple times, including 56-54 with 1:49 to play. Richmond's Grace Townsend would answer with a 3-point play the old-fashioned way to put the game out of reach.
Townsend scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Spiders, who went 11-of-13 from the line and finished with eight blocks.
The Wildcats connected on just 3-of-9 tries at the stripe and shot 36.1 percent on the night.
After both teams got off to sluggish starts offensively, Richmond connected on 10-of-13 from the floor in the second quarter and closed the half on a 17-7 run to lead 34-26 at the break.
The opening 20 minutes featured five ties and six lead changes before the Spiders broke a 21-21 deadlock with 10 of the next 12 points to go in front for good.
In the third quarter, it was the Wildcats that had the hot hand, connecting on 56.3 percent of their attempts to cut the deficit to 49-47 on a last-second layup by Morgan.
