'Cats Secure Road Win at Furman

9/26/2023 9:11:00 PM | Men's Soccer

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Junior Vincent Bennage recorded a goal and two assists while goalkeeper Lou Liedtka made six saves to lift the Davidson Wildcats to a 3-1 win over Furman in their non-conference finale on Tuesday night.

1st Half
Davidson came out of the gates fast and asserted themselves as the aggressor. The Wildcats sent out four shots in the first ten minutes before Furman was able to finally get its first. Wildcat strikers Denis Krioutchenkov and Vincent Bennage were responsible for all four early attempts.

In the 19th minute, Furman turned the tides for a moment behind a flurry of opportunities. The Paladins had a free kick hit off the crossbar then, one minute later, the home team had a shot saved with a near-empty net. Fortunately for the Wildcats, a defender was able to block the shot before it crossed the line.

The 'Cats were quick to recover when Maddux Reece poked the ball away from the Paladins in the midfield and towards the feet of Bennage. Bennage took a few dribbles towards the Davidson attacking third before sending a pass over to Krioutchenkov. The forward from Milwaukee fired a successful shot from just outside the 18-yard line to give Davidson a 1-0 lead.

Liedtka was called into action two more times in the first half but made both saves to retain the lead going into the final 45 minutes.

2nd Half
The Wildcats kept their foot on the gas coming out of the locker room and quickly pulled away. In the 56th minute, Luke Bryant launched a throw-in from deep in Furman's defensive zone and found Bennage. The junior striker found a streaking Nicholas Cavallo on the left side who beat the keeper to give Davidson a 2-0 lead.

Six minutes later, Bennage found himself at the receiving end of a Bryant cross at point-blank range. The Kenosha, Wisc., native headed it in for his team-leading fourth goal of the season which also gave the 'Cats a commanding 3-0 lead.

The Paladins added a 71st minute goal to make it 3-1, but Davidson's defense allowed just two shots the rest of the way to seal the victory.

With the win, Davidson ends non-conference play with a 6-1-1 record.

Up Next
The Wildcats will shift their focus to A-10 play as they travel to Fordham this coming Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest.
