
Wildcats Open Fall Season at UNC Greensboro

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson College men's tennis team is set to open the 2023 fall season at the UNC Greensboro Invitational Friday, competing in a three-day competition hosted by the Spartans.
The invitational will feature six teams in host UNCG and the Wildcats in addition to James Madison, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Longwood.
This years team is composed of eight returners and a two-member freshmen class.
SENIORS:
- Maxwell Kachkarov: Named a 2023 ITA Scholar Athlete. Won six singles matches as a junior and was part of the team's top doubles unit. Went 7-8 in doubles play with Juan Camilo Perez Gongora at No. 1. Closed out the regular season with three-straight singles victories at No. 3. with a 6-3, 6-0 win at Gardner-Webb, a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 decision against UNCG and a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Dayton. Named A-10 Player of the Week after going 1-1 in doubles play and singles play, including leading Davidson to a 4-1 win over Dayton during the regular season finale.
- Alejandro Solares: Posted a team-best record a year ago of 10-8 leading the 'Cats as the only player with double-digit wins during the 2023 campaign. He picked up a 6-2 record at No. 3, while going 3-2 against Atlantic 10 opponents. Solares also went 3-0 in doubles play against A-10 teams during the regular season, while winning seven-straight singles matches across courts two and three. Was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team.
- Jerry Wang: Named a 2023 ITA Scholar Athlete. Served as team captain. Named to College Sports Communicator's Academic All-District Team. Clinched two game-winning matches for Davidson at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over LIU and a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback victory against George Mason at the A-10 Quarterfinals. Ended the season 9-9 in singles play, going 6-4 at No. 6 and 4-2 against Atlantic 10 opponents. Picked up a 6-3, 6-1 victory against crosstown rival Charlotte.
JUNIORS:
- Nico Pinzon: Named a 2023 ITA Scholar Athlete. Picked up seven singles victories as a sophomore, while winning four doubles matches. Went 3-0 in doubles play against A-10 opponents during the regular season. Opened up the season with four-straight singles wins against DePaul, UIC, St. Bonaventure and Belmont Abbey. Earned a 7-5, 6-1 win from court five against Fordham.
- Juan Camilo Perez Gongora: Named a 2023 ITA Scholar Athlete. Had a successful sophomore season, winning nine singles matches and competing in Davidson's top doubles duo. Went 4-0 in conference singles matches, while going 3-0 at No. 3 and 6-7 overall at No. 4. Picked up three-straight victories against UNCG (6-1, 6-0), Richmond (2-6, 6-1, 6-1) and George Mason (6-0, 6-1). Earned seven victories in doubles play at No. 1 with Kachkarov, winning three-straight against The Citadel, Charlotte, Elon.
- Luca Lovrich: Appeared in two singles matches and five doubles contests a season ago. Went 3-2 in doubles play earning a 6-2 win against The Citadel, a 7-6 (7-5) decision against UNC Greensboro and a 6-2 victory over Dayton.
- Udday Singh: Did not see action in the spring 2023 season and was named a 2023 ITA Scholar Athlete.
SOPHOMORES:
- Sebastian Carpio Moran: Named a 2023 ITA Scholar Athlete. Appeared in five doubles and four singles matches as a freshman. Earned his first collegiate victory against Belmont Abbey at No. 6 (6-2, 6-2).
FRESHMEN:
The Wildcats will welcome the talents of Charlie Ratliff and Nikhil Mukherjee who will make their collegiate debut's during the 2023-24 season.
PREVIOUSLY AT UNCG
Day One: Davidson opened up with a doubles match against UNC Asheville and then met James Madison University for the afternoon match up. Against the Dukes, Singh and Solares picked up a 6-4 victory in addition to Pinzon and Camilo Perez Gongora's 6-3 win at court three. In the nightcap, Singh and Solares earned a No. 1 win, 7-5, against Greensboro, while Kachkarov and William Clark defeated the Spartans 7-6 (2) from court two.
Day Two: Solares and Gongora served as the bright spots during Saturday's matches, with Solares defeating Campbell's Petko 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2. Later in the day, Gongora downed Presbyterian's Javier Matos 6-3, 6-4 at court five.
Day Three: Davidson had five 'Cats pick up singles victories against the Bulldogs. Singh, Solares and Kachkarov went one, two, three in solo wins, while Gongora earned a 6-2, 6-4 decision at court five and Wangrounded out the day with a 6-0, 6-1 win.
