LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Davidson women's basketball team fell in the opening round of the Women's Basketball Invitational on Friday night, after a hot-shooting second quarter propelled the Nevada Wolf Pack past the Wildcats, 76-63.
The 'Cats ended the night shooting 45.3 percent from the floor, just behind Nevada's 46.9 percent effort. The Wolf Pack, who were 19-11 entering tonight's game, drained 10 3-pointers on 20 attempts and utilized a 28-point second quarter to secure the WBI victory.
The Wildcats got off to a strong start in the first, building to a 5-0 start and leading 13-4 after five minutes of work. Davidson led by as many as 11, 18-7, by the 3:28-mark before Nevada went on a seven-point tear of their own to halt the Wildcats' spurt.
Hanging onto a 22-17 lead after one, Davidson pushed its lead to eight at the start of the second with a Cassidy Gould 3-pointer, until the Wolf Pack rattled off a 12-2 run and took hold of their first lead of the day, 29-27.
Davidson would never regain its lead in Lexington, as Nevada continued its offensive surge to establish an 11-point lead before the end of the first half, 45-34.
The 'Cats continued to fight over the final 20 minutes of work, with seniors Gould and Chloe Welch draining back-to-back treys in the opening minutes of the half, cutting the deficit to five at 45-40.
