BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Davidson men's tennis team fell to the Virginia Tech Hokies 6-1 on Saturday afternoon, despite a brilliant effort from sophomore Alejandro Solares on the singles courts.Â
Davidson's lone point of the day came from Solares' singles victory at No. 2 against VT's Alvaro Ariza. The Guatemala native dropped the first set 4-6 before bouncing back to settle the score with a second set, 7-6 (8-6) comeback win. With the match on the line the sophomore 'Cat then earned a 1-0 (10-7) decision, clinching the Wildcats' only point in Blacksburg. Solares now improves to 2-1 on the season, while earning his first No. 2 victory of 2022.Â
Another bright spot for Davidson was on the doubles courts, as William Clark and Juan Camilo Perez Gongora defeated the Hokies 6-3 from court three for their first doubles duo win of the season.
Virginia Tech eventually clinched the 6-1 win on court six, but not without a fight from Davidson's Brooks Green. Despite losing the first set to Michael Shepheard 3-6, the senior took home a 6-2 second set victory before dropping the defining set, 1-0 (10-4). Sophomore Maxwell Kachkarov also battled at No. 1 for his 2022 season debut, falling just 3-6, 4-6 to VT's #78 Ryan Fishback.
The 'Cats are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 12 against Wingate at 1 p.m.
