'Cats Ousted at Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. – The Davidson Wildcats were unable to overcome a fast start by Rhode Island on Sunday, falling 68-54 to the top-seeded Rams inside the Thomas M. Ryan Center.
Davidson (11-6, 2-3 A-10) shot 31.7 percent from the floor while the Rams torched the nets at a 48.3 percent clip in the first half to take the win and improve to 15-3 overall and 5-0 in Atlantic 10 play.
Elle Sutphin led Davidson with 18 points, and was the lone 'Cat to reach double figures in scoring. Freshman Sallie Schutz recorded a career-high eight points, while Adelaide Fuller and Issy Morgan added eight and nine points, respectively. Senior Chloe Welch ended the day with three steals, five rebounds and six points.
The Rams jumped out to a 4-0 start after the opening tip, but the Wildcats halted the run thanks to a corner 3-pointer from Welch. Rhody responded right away with another run, this time 7-0, to take a 13-3 lead before the six-minute mark. After a 3-pointer from Schutz with 2:22 remaining, the 'Cats went off on an 8-0 scoring tear to close out the first quarter, 15-12, capped off by another trey from Welch.
The three-point deficit heading into the second frame was the closest Davidson would get to Rhody all day, as the Rams outscored the 'Cats 22-7 to establish a 37-19 lead at the halftime break.
Rhode Island would hang onto its 20-point lead for a majority of the second half, although the 'Cats cut the deficit down to 11 in the final three minutes of play thanks to an 11-2 run off 3-pointer's from Sutphin, Schutz and Morgan, making it a 65-54 game.
The 'Cats ended the day with 20 points in the paint compared to Rhody's 40, while the Rams won the battle on the glass 47-33.
