DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson will hit the road to take on Pioneer Football League opponent Stetson for a 1 p.m. tilt on Saturday, Oct. 2 at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium.
Both teams are currently posting a 2-1 overall record with Davidson sitting at 1-0 in conference play. Saturday's matchup will be the first conference game of the season for the Hatters.
THE SERIES
Davidson and Stetson first met in November, 1912. The all-time series is tied at 6-6, with the Wildcats winning the last two meetings, both on the road.
LAST TIME OUT
The Wildcats started Pioneer Football League play with a splash and a second straight win over long-time league power San Diego, earning a 28-16 victory at Richardson Stadium last Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats held San Diego (0-4) to one touchdown and two third-down conversions on 10 attempts.
Davidson took over in the second half, pulling ahead 14-9 in the third quarter when sophomore slot Mark McCurdy scored on a four-yard run to cap an 11-play, 75-yard drive. The go-ahead score was set up by a 34-yard pass from Louis Colosimo to Eli Turner Jr. to inside the 5.
The Wildcats extended their lead early in the fourth, when Turner ran for a five-yard score to end a four-play, 50-yard drive. Turner's scoring run came two plays after he found receiver Jalen Staples on a 34-yard halfback pass play to the San Diego 5.
Later in the quarter, a 24-yard touchdown pass from Colosimo to Turner put the 'Cats up 28-16 with just under three minutes left in the game. An interception from sophomore cornerback Jordan Burrell on the first play of San Diego's drive with 2:28 to go sealed the deal for Davidson.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Davidson is currently outrushing its opponents 924 yards to 495, averaging 281.3 yards per game. Senior running back Coy Williams leads the Wildcats with 214 yards and three rushing touchdowns. He needs just four more rushing TDs to crack into the top-10 all-time for the Wildcats. Sophomore slot Mark McCurdy sits right behind him at 202 yards and two rushing TDs. Junior RB Dylan Sparks also has two rushing TDs for the Wildcats.
Linebacker Jake Alexander has taken charge on defense, recording 13 solo tackles across three games. The junior also leads overall with 19 total tackles. Safety Jaden Pask and defensive end Jonathan Hammond are right behind him with 15 and 14 apiece. Hammond has also recorded two sacks for a loss of 12 yards.
So far this season, it's been a two-man effort at QB between Colosimo and Elijah Burrell. Together they have completed 20 of 32 passes and thrown for a combined 219 yards.
With the victory over San Diego last week, coach Scott Abell became the fastest coach in Davidson football history to reach 20 wins, doing it in 33 games. William Younger was the previous record holder when he reached 20 wins in 34 games.
