DAVIDSON — An improved defensive effort kept the Davidson field hockey team in it with No. 21 UMass Friday night in a 4-0 loss at Belk Turf Field.
The Atlantic 10 Conference opener was tight for more than three periods, with the Minutewomen pulling away with two goals in the final quarter, including on a penalty shot with four seconds remaining.
"I'm really proud of how this team fights," said Davidson coach Zoe Almquist. "We hung in there against a tough UMass team — they're excellent. I'm really proud of our corner defense tonight, not allowing any goals on nine corners, and keeper Cato Roell was excellent (with nine saves)."
UMass held a 20-5 shots advantage, including 13-2 on shots-on-goal. Natalie Naticchia and Adriana Risi had the shots-on-goal for Davidson, which were saved on dives by UMass goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder, a South African Olympian.
Bella Ianni led UMass with two goals.
