FAIRFAX, Va. -- Despite trailing briefly early on, a five-goal tear midway through the first half allowed the Wildcats to build a lead they would never give up, as Davidson won its A-10 opener 16-8 against George Mason on Friday.
The Wildcats controlled the possessions on net, out-shooting George Mason 36-23 overall. Five-time Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, Julianne Carey, led the way for the 'Cats recording a hat trick to go along with two assists. Gianna New and Erin Cooke also paced the Davidson offense, as they each recorded four points apiece.
After a slow start that saw the Wildcats trailing 4-2, 15 minutes in, Carey began the five-goal offensive surge that put Davidson in front of the Patriots by as many as three goals.
With 16:08 on the clock, Carey dove through the crease and cut the Wildcats' deficit to one, 4-3. Later, Olivia Carey would connect with Jane DiGregorio on the arc, as DiGregorio netted the Wildcats' fifth goal of the day and handed the team its first lead of the game since the opening minutes.
After a pump fake, off a dish from Erin Cooke, Julianne Carey had one more score left in her before the half expired that put Davidson ahead 7-4. However, the Patriots tacked on two goals of their own to make it a 7-6 game heading into the break.
New and Cooke turned up the heat in the second, opening up the frame with three-straight goals, and establishing a 10-7 lead for the 'Cats by the 18:31-mark. Minutes later, Sam Rippley knotted her third goal of the day, allowing the Wildcats to build their largest lead of the game, and put the contest out of reach for the Patriots.
From there Davidson recorded five more goals, while Amanda Monahan made nine saves, as the 'Cats coasted to a 16-8 win.
