WASHINGTON D.C. -- With a combined 10 points from sisters Olivia and Julianne Carey, the Davidson lacrosse team trounced George Washington, 18-7, on Sunday, marking the first time that the program has begun Atlantic 10 Conference play with two wins.
As the 'Cats are 2-0 in A-10 play for the first time in program history, the hot start also marks the first time that Davidson has won its first two league games since 2014, when the Wildcats won back-to-back Big South Conference match ups against Winthrop and Campbell.
Senior Olivia Carey notched a career-high five points off of a career-high four goals, and one assist in the win. Freshman Julianne Carey, and reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, also recorded four goals and one assist, matching the Pennsylvania native's career-best in points while setting a new career-high in goals scored.
Between the pipes, Amanda Monahan picked up six saves while Natalie Junior added three caused turnovers on defense. Aside from the Carey duo, eight additional Wildcats recorded at least one point with Erin Cooke adding four to the score sheet off one goal and three assists.
The Wildcats never trailed against the Colonials, as Sam Rippley took all of 70 seconds to get Davidson on the scoreboard with her first goal of the day. While George Washington answered back quickly, Emma Johnson shut down the home team and ignited a four-goal surge for the 'Cats.
With a 10-5 lead heading into the halftime break Davidson came out ready to continue their dominance in the second. The 'Cats held the Colonials to just two second half goals while adding eight more of their own and owning the shot count, 41-22.
Davidson will resume A-10 play next week from Richardson Stadium, playing host to No. 15 Richmond on Thursday, April 1.
