DAVIDSON, N.C. -- In a highly offensive matchup, the Davidson lacrosse team controlled VCU for 60 straight minutes on Friday night, as the 'Cats defeated the Rams, 15-9, for their first win over the Atlantic 10 foe since 2017.
With the win, the Wildcats grabbed a strong grip over second place among the A-10's Southern Division standings, improving to 3-0 in league play and 8-2 overall on the year.
Davidson jumped out early, with three quick goals in the opening five minutes of play. On unassisted opportunities, Erin Cooke, Sam Rippley and Julianne Carey all started the scoring for the 'Cats, while Cooke went on to have a career-best night, recording seven points off four goals and three assists. Rippley, along with Gianna New, aided Cooke in the offensive surge, as the two Wildcats contributed four points apiece and combined for six draw controls.
With a 6-2 lead and 10 minutes remaining in the first, Rippley recorded her 30th goal of the season, and 92nd career point, before Cooke and Carey connected on a give-and-go pass to put Davidson up with a six-goal advantage.
The Rams kicked things up a notch in the second half, improving their offense from 12 first half shots to 17 in the second. But despite their best efforts, netminder Amanda Monahan shut down any VCU threat, coming up with 12 total saves to secure the Davidson win.
Grace Fahey, Jane DiGregorio and Olivia Carey all added to Friday's scoresheet as well, as Fahey notched two goals and one assist for the second consecutive outing.
