DAVIDSON, N.C. -- With a similar preseason resume to the Pirates, the Davidson Wildcats jumped out to an aggressive start and never looked back this evening, as the 'Cats trounced ECU 15-6 through 60 minutes of work.
In their second win of the young season, Davidson improves to 2-1 while ECU drops to 1-2. Netminder Amanda Monahan earned her third-straight start and picked up the second win of her career, stopping nine shots and allowing just five goals. The Wildcats' six goals allowed from tonight marks a team-best since Davidson held Furman to just five goals in February of 2020.
Sam Rippley dominated the midfield this evening, as the senior rattled off five goals and dished one assist for a game-high six points. The Colorado native grabbed four draw controls and tallied three of Davidson's seven second-half scores.
Gianna New and Rippley got Davidson on the board early, as the two 'Cats scored back-to-back goals through the first six minutes of play. ECU answered back with a goal of their own, but the one-goal game wouldn't last long, as Rippley, Erin Cooke and Olivia Carey combined for three more consecutive scores, allowing the Wildcats to establish a solid 5-1 lead. In the 24th minute of play, and with a 6-1 lead, Lauren Arkell finished a free-position shot, for her first goal of the season, and recorded Davidson's ultimate game-winner.
On the defensive end, the 'Cats caused seven turnovers and picked up 23 ground balls.
Davidson will now hit the road for four-straight away games, beginning with a Sunday afternoon tilt on Feb. 28 against Campbell University. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
