BLACKSBURG, Va. – Playing its fourth nationally-ranked opponent of the 2021 campaign, Davidson suffered a 4-0 setback to No. 5 Virginia Tech in non-conference men's soccer action Tuesday evening at Thompson Field.
The Wildcats, who are now 2-2-0 against the Top-25 this season, fall to 7-5-1 overall, while the Hokies improve to 8-1-3.
Conor Pugh paced Virginia Tech with a goal in each half, including the eventual game-winner at the 15:35 mark that was assisted by Nick Blacklock and Chris Little.
Pol Monnels extended the Hokies' advantage to 2-0 in the 32nd minute going top shelf with a left-footed strike.
Just prior to intermission, Benjamin Gilligan had a great opportunity to cut the deficit in half, but the Wildcat forward was unable to get a clean touch on a loose ball in the box that a Tech defender cleared off the end line.
Virginia Tech's final score of the night came off a Sivert Haugli penalty kick in the closing minutes.
Michael Zemanek led both keepers with six saves for the Wildcats.
