DAVIDSON, N.C. -- When the Davidson men's tennis team hits the court tomorrow afternoon for its 2021 season opener, it will have been 310 days since the squad last competed.
Head coach Drew Barrett and his Wildcats were in the midst of a 10-4 season, including a three-match win streak, before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down college athletics last spring.
"It was weird going home after that, after shutting down the season when we had worked so hard," said junior Brooks Green. "But this year, we have to control what we can control and work hard all season and hopefully finish it out at the conference tournament."
With an entire fall worth of workouts combined with a shortened preseason this spring, Barrett is impressed with the shape his 'Cats have returned in and is optimistic for what this season will bring.
"The guys are in shape and fit, and we're pretty excited about it," he said. "Our freshmen came back ready to go and really fired up, and our returners did as well. I think we handled the fall really well with everything that we had to deal with, so to see them come in ready to go is really exciting for me to see."
Davidson welcomes three newcomers in rookies Jerry Wang, Alejandro Solares and Maxwell Kachkarov. The 'Cats will be led by a veteran-heavy lineup, including senior Yash Parikh who returns as the team's top singles player. Parikh is a former Atlantic 10 Second Team All-Conference player and went 5-8 in singles matches last year.
The Wildcats' first serve of the 2021 season is slated for 1 p.m. tomorrow against Furman University. To keep up with this season, tune in to davidsonwildcats.com and @DavidsonTennis on Twitter.
