Davidson College mourns the loss of men's basketball great and supporter Hollis "Hobby" Cobb Jr. '56, who passed away on April 16, 2020 at the age of 85.
"Hobby Cobb was a hero to all of us by the way he lived his life," said head coach Bob McKillop. "We will all miss him dearly. Thankfully, he left his spirit with us, and that will always and ever be a big part of Davidson Basketball and my life."
To understand the impact Cobb had on Davidson basketball, all one needs to do is look at the retired basketball jerseys hanging in John M. Belk Arena. Cobb's No. 21 is one of five.
The first 1,000-point scorer in school history, Cobb was Davidson's all-time leading scorer with 1,424 points when he graduated in 1956. He also previously held the school record for points in a game (39 against Guilford), field goals in a game and career, best shooting percentage and most free throws made in a contest.
Although it has been over 60 years since he graced the hardwood in a Wildcat uniform, Cobb still ranks fifth all-time in rebounds with 836 in just 85 games.
One of just six players in the program's 112-year existence to average a double-double in a single season, he finished his career contributing 16.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.
As a freshman, Cobb was also a member of the 1952-53 golf team that won the Southern Conference Championship.
Outside of athletic competition, Hobby was a member, and President, of the Kappa Sigma social fraternity. He was elected to Who's Who Among America's Colleges and Universities, a Distinguished Military Graduate, and a member of Omicron Delta Kappa a National Leadership Fraternity.
In 1991, Cobb was inducted into the Davidson Athletics Hall of Fame.
Before enrolling at Davidson, Cobb was a first-team All-State selection at Charlotte Central High.
In addition to being longtime members of The Fast Break Club, Hobby and his wife Jane have been season ticket holders for over 30 years.
