DAVIDSON, N.C. — Dayton used a 19-4 run in the third quarter to erase Davidson's eight-point lead and the Wildcats were forced to play catchup before falling 55-49 Wednesday evening in Atlantic 10 play inside John M. Belk Arena.
Leading 35-27 in the third quarter after Katie Turner swished home two free throws with 7:50 to go, Dayton ran off a 19-4 run the remainder of the quarter to take a 46-39 lead.
The Flyers (16-7, 9-0 A-10) pushed its lead out to 12 points twice in the fourth quarter and Davidson was only able to score six points in the final four minutes to cut the deficit in half for the final score.
Cameron Tabor was the lone 'Cat to score in double figures with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting and 3-for-5 from behind the arc. Turner dropped in eight points and had a season-high eight rebounds, while Adelaide Fuller scored nine points and added seven boards off the bench.
Leading scorer Suzi-Rose Deegan (16.5 points per game on the season) was held to seven points on just 2-of-12 shooting.
Dayton's Jayla Scaife led all scorers with 25 points, while Erin Whalen finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
It was a tale of two halves for the Wildcats (13-9, 6-3, A-10), who had a strong first two quarters that helped them take a 32-26 lead on the A-10 leaders at halftime. They hit half of their field goals from three-land and turned a 15-all tie at the end of the first quarter into a 32-24 lead late in the second quarter.
The final two quarters though saw Davidson shoot just 4-of-26 from the floor, including missing all 10 three-point attempts, and scoring just 17 points, despite holding the Flyers to only nine points in the fourth quarter. Davidson also left 10 points at the charity stripe, going 16-for-26 for the game.
The Wildcats did hold Dayton to 34.4 percent shooting and out-rebounded the Flyers by six (42-36), while picking up 27 bench points.
Davidson hits the road for a two-game swing starting at St. Bonaventure this Sunday, Feb. 9.
