PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Freshman Suzi-Rose Deegan tallied game-highs of 25 points and 15 rebounds, and combined with Cassidy Gould for 10 points in overtime to help Davidson capture a 70-61 victory Wednesday morning at La Salle in a women's basketball Education Day game inside Tom Gola Arena.
Davidson ran its record to 15-13 overall and 8-7 in Atlantic 10 play and assured itself of hosting the first round of the A-10 Tournament next week.
The Australian duo came up big in the extra period, each scoring five points. Deegan opened the 'Cats' scoring with the first four points for a 62-60 lead and later Gould drilled a clutch three-pointer with 50 seconds to go to put them up 69-61. Deegan finished off the win by hitting a free throw with 33 seconds left and then getting the offensive rebound on her missed second attempt.
Deegan's double-double was her team-leading sixth of the season, as she set a new season-best in rebounds and had her sixth 20-point outing.
Gould finished with a season-high 15 points, and Chloe Welch came off the bench to score 13, all in the second half.
The Wildcats hauled in a season-high 60 rebounds, including a season-best 21 on offense, and scored 36 points in the paint.
Davidson overcame a 55-49 deficit early in the fourth quarter and then a 58-56 deficit with 35 ticks remaining in regulation after La Salle's Claire Jacobs converted a three-point play.
Deegan hit a driving layup with 24 seconds remaining to tie the game, and then the Wildcats' defense forced a missed jumper by the Explorers in the closing seconds to send the game into OT.
La Salle (12-16, 6-9 A-10) was paced by Jacobs' 18 points, while Kayla Spruill had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Explorers had an 11-point lead (44-33) in the third quarter, but the Wildcats chipped away and got within four, 44-40, before ending the quarter down 49-40.
Davidson opened the game with a 12-7 lead at the 4:31 mark. La Salle countered with a 14-2 run to close out the first quarter with a 21-14 advantage.
The next quarter had the Wildcats come right back and take a one-point lead, 24-23, on a pair of free throws from Deegan at 6:28 to cap off a 10-2 run, but the advantage would not last long. The Explorers answered by scoring nine of the last 11 points of the quarter and the 'Cats trailed 32-26 at halftime.
The Wildcats wrap up the regular season with their Senior Day game at home against VCU Saturday at 1 p.m.
GAME NOTES: This was seventh meeting all-time between both team's women's basketball programs …. The Wildcats pulled ahead in the series, 4-3, with their third straight win … the win snapped a three-game road skid as well as a three-game skid in league road games … it also halted the 'Cats' two-game overall losing streak … Adelaide Fuller had a season-best nine rebounds … the 60 total rebounds were the most since 52 at home last year vs. St. Bonaventure in the first round of the A-10 Tourney … Ally Welling picked up a season-best three blocks and moved up to seventh all-time in the Wildcats' record books ... Davidson improved to 12-0 when it scores 70 or more points in a game.
