Davidson Picks Up First Win of the Season at Furman, 14-5

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Six players recorded multiple points and the Davidson women's lacrosse team picked up their first win of the 2020 season by taking a 14-5 decision on the road at Furman Saturday afternoon.
Opening the season against nationally-ranked opponents Virginia Tech and North Carolina, the Wildcats turned that experience into a solid victory Saturday to move their record to 1-2 on the season. They also improved to 3-0 in the all-time series vs. Furman.
Shayne Antolini led the way with a season-high four points on a hat trick and an assist. Gianna New (three goals), Olivia Carey (goal, two assists) and Erin Cooke (goal, two assists) contributed three points each.
That quartet played a big role in the Wildcats opening the game up 5-1 and eventually taking an 8-3 lead after the first half. All of them recorded at least one point, with Carey getting all three of her points in the half, while New had a pair of goals.
Emma Johnson tallied back-to-back goals to open the second half and Davidson finished off the win with four goals in a row in the last 12:12 of the game. New's third goal of the game made it 12-5 and Tess Reiman capped it off with her second score of the season with 58 ticks left.
Furman's (2-2) Grace Pollak scored twice, while Lauren Farber had two points on a goal and an assist.
Davidson fired off 34 shots to the Paladins' 17 and had a 26-18 advantage on groundballs. Furman won draw controls at 12-9.
The Wildcats also forced 22 turnovers on the afternoon, as 10 players caused at least one led by Eva Finn and Shannon Blee with four each. Blee also scooped up four groundballs.
Between the pipes, senior Delaney Guhman won her first game of the season with six saves to go with a team-high five groundballs and a caused turnover.
Davidson continues on with its season-long five-game road trip to start the season by visiting Elon, Feb. 29.
