Comeback Falls Short for Wildcats at Elon, 11-10

ELON, N.C. — Davidson's late comeback at Elon fell just short Saturday afternoon as it dropped an 11-10 decision in women's lacrosse at Rudd Field.

Down 11-7 with under 10 minutes to go, the Wildcats were able to score three straight goals, including Gianna New's sixth score of the season with 28 seconds to go to make it 11-10. But, the ensuing draw control was picked up by the Phoenix and they ran the clock out to halt the 'Cats' comeback.

Three 'Cats (1-3) had multiple goals on the afternoon, led by freshman Grace Fahey's hat trick to go along with an assist for four points. Erin Cooke and Anna West scored twice each, and Anne Margaret Warner had a goal and an assist.

Sara Bouwman led the way for the Phoenix with five goals, followed by Mae McGlynn and Cate Mackel with three and two goals, respectively.

The first half saw Bouwman score four of her goals to give Elon a 5-3 lead, but Fahey kept Davidson close with two of her goals and the pair of Erin Cooke and Shayne Antolini scored back-to-back in the final 4:27 to cut the 'Cats' deficit at halftime to 6-5.

Elon (3-1) broke open a tight first half by scoring four of the first five goals to start the new half and went up 10-6 with 21:15 left in the game.

Elon had advantages in shots (26-22), groundballs (20-10) and draw controls (17-6), while going a perfect 17-for-17 on clears.

Natalie Junior and Jane Digregorio had two groundballs each to pace the Wildcats, while Junior added two draw controls and tied a career-high with five caused turnovers.

Between the pipes, Delaney Guhman came up with six saves on the afternoon and a groundball.

Davidson wraps up its five-game road trip to start the year with a mid-week game at Old Dominion, March 4, with game time set for 3 p.m.
