DAVIDSON, N.C. — Junior Katie Turner reached 1,000 career points and three Davidson players scored in double figures, but it was not enough to off-set a tough shooting night on its home court as it dropped a 63-54 decision Wednesday to Saint Joseph's in Atlantic 10 women's basketball inside John M. Belk Arena.
Turner became the program's 21st player to join the 1,000-point club when she hit a running layup with 1:08 to go in the fourth quarter to give her a team-high tying 12 points.
The Wildcats (14-12, 7-6 A-10) though were not able to find their shot on the night, going just 18-of-61 from the field, including only 10-for-32 in the second half. They hit four three-pointers in the fourth quarter, but only went 5-of-16 overall from the floor.
Down just 43-40 entering the fourth quarter after trailing as many as nine in the previous quarter, Davidson lost its momentum when it missed its first five shots and saw the Hawks go on an 11-3 run to push their lead to double digits. The 'Cats trailed by as many as 13 the rest of the way.
Suzi-Rose Deegan tied Turner with 12 points and added eight rebounds, while Chloe Welch had her 14th double-digit scoring game with an even 10. Sarah Konstans hauled in nine rebounds and Cassidy Gould finished with eight points, five rebounds and two steals.
Saint Joseph's (9-16, 3-10 A-10) was led by Katie Jekot's 17 points and Lula Roig's 15, 11 of which came in the first half. It shot 45.7 percent for the game and finished 16-of-25 at the charity stripe, including 13-of-16 in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.
Davidson's last lead of the game was a brief 10-8 score in the first quarter with 1:58 on the clock after five straight points from Gould.
Up 14-12 after the first quarter, the Hawks hit seven of their first 10 shots and went up by 15 points (32-17) on an 18-5 run to start the next quarter. Davidson was able to close the gap in the final 3:49, using a 9-2 run to get within 34-26 at halftime.
Davidson reached the 40-rebound mark for the 12th time with a game-high 41 and pulled in 19 offensive rebounds, one off its season high. But, it was only able to get 10 points off those second-chances.
The Wildcats next hit the road for their final two road games of the regular season, starting with a trip to UMass this Saturday for a 12 p.m. tip.
GAME NOTES: This was seventh meeting all-time between both team's women's basketball programs …. The Wildcats are still seeking their first win in the series, falling to 0-7 vs. the Hawks … Davidson fell to 7-4 at home with a 4-3 mark vs. A-10 foes.
