GENEVA, Ohio — There's no time more exciting for Davidson swimmers and divers than the conference championships — and that time is now.
For the next four days, the Wildcats will be competing against their league foes at the 2020 Atlantic 10 Conference Championships at the SPIRE Institute.
"We've watched them put in the work, we know they're prepared and so we hope they'll enjoy the opportunity to strut their stuff," said Davidson coach John Young. "This is the fun part. The A-10 Championship offers an electric environment to the athletes. It's loud. It's fast. Hopefully, we're making it louder and faster."
"It's unlike any swim meet you've ever been to before," said junior Sarah Helen Shepherd, who owns school records in the 200 backstroke and 400 individual medley. "It's very, very high-energy, which makes swimming fast a lot easier than at a dual meet. It's just really exciting."
The meet begins with a few events Wednesday, including women's one-meter diving, the 200-yard medley relays and the 800 freestyle relays. The following days are full of action, as Thursday, Friday and Saturday will include 10 a.m. preliminaries and early-evening finals.
The Davidson men and women plan to cheer each other on from start to finish. That's what the A-10 meet is all about.
"The energy is completely different; it's so team-oriented," said senior Griffen Younger. "Basically, from the moment we get up there Wednesday night and finals start, until when we leave Saturday night, you're standing up, hooting and hollering the whole time. It's a blast."
Young wants to see the Wildcats compete and also have fun.
"To be capable of performing at a high level, to represent an amazing school, to be surrounded by friends and family — it's all a blessing," he said. "I hope the Wildcats inspire each other and enjoy every moment."
