Wildcats Fall at No. 2 UNC Sunday

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.  — Davidson continued its five-game road trip by playing at No. 2 North Carolina Sunday and fell 22-5 at Dorrance Field in non-conference women's lacrosse action.

The Wildcats (0-2) were playing their second straight ranked opponent from the ACC after facing No. 23 Virginia Tech last weekend (Feb. 8). The Tar Heels are the second-highest ranked opponent the 'Cats have ever faced during their history after taking on then No. 1 Northwestern in 2005.

UNC, which improved to 3-0 on the season, scored the first seven goals of the game, and 15 total in the first half, on its way to the victory.

Davidson was able to find its offense in the second half, scoring four goals, including three straight in a five-minute span from Grace Fahey, Tess Reiman and Anna West. Fahey added an assist in the first half for two points.

In addition to those three Wildcats, Shannon Blee and Erin Cooke also scored on the afternoon, while Olivia Carey dished out an assist.

The Tar Heels had six multi-goal scorers, led by Jamie Ortega's five goals to go with three assists for eight points. Katie Hoeg also had eight points on two goals and six assists. Ida Farinholt registered a hat trick and four points, while Marisa DiVietro also had four points on two goals and two assists.

North Carolina had advantages in shots (37-12), groundballs (21-15) and draw controls (17-10).

Gianna New tied her season-high with five draw controls and Katy Morris scooped up a team-best three groundballs.

Davidson's three goalkeepers, Delaney Guhman, Morris and Amanda Monahan, all saw action between the pipes. Morris halted a season-best six shots, while Guhman had two saves to go with two groundballs. Monahan saw her first collegiate action, playing nearly 20 minutes and earned her first career save.

Davidson will seek to get its first win of the season when it travels to Furman this coming Saturday, Feb. 22.
