NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Davidson's Sarah Helen Shepherd and Shelby Stanley have swept the Atlantic 10 women's swimming and diving weekly awards, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.
Shepherd was named A-10 Performer of the Week for the second time this year (Oct. 29), while Stanley was named A-10 Rookie of the Week for the third time (Oct. 22, Dec. 10). The awards sweep is the second for the women's team this season, as freshman Abby Francis earned Rookie honors alongside Shepherd on Oct. 29.
This week's honors are based on performances Saturday at William & Mary.
A junior from Chapel Hill, Shepherd won three events against the Tribe and posted the A-10's best times of the weekend in all three. She set a pool record in the 200-yard individual medley (2:04.97) and also won the 100 breaststroke (1:05.12) and the 200 backstroke (2:03.04).
"The work that Sarah Helen has done in and out of the pool has kept her on an extraordinary trajectory," said Davidson coach John Young. "She was impressive again this weekend, grabbing clutch wins in tight races to set the tone for the 'Cats. I love to see her honored as she is doing all the right things and has positioned herself to have a really special championship season."
Stanley, a freshman from Roanoke, Va., swept the butterfly events at William & Mary, winning the 100 fly in 56.93 and the 200 fly in 2:05.67. All her times — also including a 2:06.92 in the 200 IM — were tops among A-10 freshmen this past weekend, while her 200 fly performance ranked second among all A-10 swimmers.
"I'm proud of Shelby for bouncing back from illness first semester and putting herself back in position to be a leader for the 'Cats in February," said Young. "She locked down the butterflies this weekend with huge swims for the Cats."
