The Davidson volleyball team begins a long stretch of matches in Belk Arena this weekend when it hosts the Davidson Invitational Friday and Saturday.
Â
The four-team event, and the first of the Wildcats' two home tournaments, will also include N.C. Central, Presbyterian and UNC Wilmington.
Â
"The Davidson Invitational is a great home opening weekend for us," said Davidson coach Chris Willis. "We're playing teams from three different conferences that will challenge us to be our best. Each team has a coach that I admire and enjoy competing against." Â
Â
Davidson will host the Wildcat Classic Sept. 20-21, when it welcomes Jacksonville, Wofford and High Point to Belk Arena. In all, the team that played its first six matches away from campus will play 11 of its next 12 at home, with the lone exception being a Sept. 17 match at UNC Charlotte.
Â
"This tournament kicks off five straight weekends in Baker Sports Complex," said Willis. "I hope our home-court advantage propels us on to great achievements this year."Â
Â
Davidson (2-4) is coming off a 1-2 performance at the Liberty Invitational last weekend, which included a win over Elon.
Â
Team leaders
Sophomore hitter Hattie Rodriguez leads Davidson with 54 kills and three per set. Junior middle blocker Ellie Crosley has a team-best .319 hitting percentage, and freshman Madeline Wynn has a team-high 25 blocks.
Â
Junior setter Sydney Champaigne has 194 assists (8.08/set), and senior Josie Treadwell leads with 97 digs.
Â
The Field
N.C. Central: The Eagles are seeking their first win as they enter a Thursday home match with North Dakota, prior to traveling to Davidson. The Eagles, 6-19 a year ago, are 0-7 after a 3-0 loss at Elon Tuesday.
Â
Presbyterian: The Blue Hose are 2-5 following a 3-0 loss to Wofford Wednesday. PC's returning kills leader, sophomore Erin Cooke, is the daughter of long-time Davidson baseball coach Dick Cooke.
Â
UNCW: The Seahawks are off to a 6-1 start after winning 15 matches last year. UNCW is coming off a 2-1 tournament performance at Duke last weekend, where they earned wins over Appalachian State and Wofford and lost to the host Blue Devils.
