DAVIDSON, N.C. — The 2019 season begins for the Davidson women's soccer team this Thursday night when it plays host to Gardner-Webb at Alumni Stadium.
The Matchup ...
Davidson will welcome the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs (12-5-4, 7-1-2 Big South last year) at Alumni Stadium Thursday, Aug. 22, for a 7 p.m. contest.
The All-Time Series/Last Meetings ...
Davidson will be facing the Bulldogs for the ninth time (8-0-0) dating back to the first meeting in 1990 as they look to remain unbeaten in the series. A year ago, the Wildcats went to Boiling Springs, N.C., and scored a 2-0 win. Michele Manceaux and Alexa Landsberger each scored a goal with Natalie Connell earning an assist in the victory.
A-10 Preseason ...
The Atlantic 10 preseason coaches poll had the Saint Louis Billikens as the favorites to win the league again after claiming the title last year. The Billikens (18-4-1 last year) earned 192 votes and 13 first-place tallies to take the top spot in the rankings. Last year's runner-up, VCU, finished second in the predicted order of finish with 176 points, followed by George Mason and Saint Joseph's, who tallied 163 and 161 votes, respectively, to round out the top four spots. George Mason also earned a first-place vote.
Davidson was picked to finish 12th in the preseason poll with 40 points, ahead of St. Bonaventure (28) and Rhode Island (26).
30th Anniversary Celebration ...
Davidson will celebrate 30 years of women's soccer this season, with a celebration gathering over the weekend of Sept. 6-8 and then capped off by Senior Day against Georgia Southern that Sunday the 8th at 2 p.m.
Season and Home Openers ...
The Wildcats are 12-18 all-time in season openers after falling 2-0 to Coastal Carolina a year ago on their home field at Alumni Stadium. The setback also saw the 'Cats record fall to 17-13 all-time in home openers.
Scouting the Wildcats ...
•This is Davidson's 31st year of women's soccer.
•Head coach Adam Denton enters his third year at the helm of the program.
•Thursday's game marks the ninth consecutive year the Wildcats will start their season at home.
•26 letterwinners return from last season, including seven starters.
•10 newcomers join the team this year.
•Davidson went 2-14-1 last year with an 0-9-1 mark in league play.
•Six of the nine goal scorers from last season return, including Michele Manceaux who had team-bests of five goals and 11 points.
•Returning between the pipes is Sarah L'Hommedieu, who started all 14 games she played and finished with 73 saves.
