Saint Joseph’s Takes 19-12 Decision Over 'Cats in A-10 Lax

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Saint Joseph's broke up a close game by outscoring Davidson 6-2 in the final 16:27 to pull away and send the Wildcats to a 19-12 setback on the road Sunday afternoon in women's Atlantic 10 lacrosse at Sweeney Field.
With the defeat, the Wildcats' record falls to an even 7-7 (1-5 A-10), while the Hawks improved to 9-5 overall with a 5-1 mark in the league.
Davidson was mounting a comeback effort after trailing by seven goals (13-6) early in the second half, closing within 13-10 on Shannon Blee's goal and 17:21 on the clock. Saint Joseph's countered with the next three goals, starting at 16:27, and then added three more in the final 5:25 to secure the home win.
For the fifth time this year, Braeden Dial recorded a four-goal outing and added three assists for a new season-best seven points. The freshman, who has won the A-10 Rookie of the Week three times, tried to keep the Wildcats close by scoring two goals and assisting on another during the 'Cats 4-0 run in the second half that brought them to within three goals. Later, she added her final goal and 28th of the season at the 5:50 mark to make it 16-12.
Blee and Sarah Kopp had two goals each and Olivia Carey dished out two assists.
Saint Joseph's Stephanie Kelly had a game-high 10 points on a hat trick and seven assists. Kelly helped the Hawks put the game away with three goals and two assists during their 6-2 run to finish out the game.
Francesca Donato was right behind her nine points on six goals and three assists. Lauren Figura scored five goals and five other Hawk players had one goal each.
Saint Joe's won the shot count, 42-26, and groundballs, 22-16, while Davidson held a 19-14 edge in draw controls. Both teams converted three free-position attempts.
Davidson fell behind 5-1 after the first 10 minutes of play, but slowly got back in it by scoring four of the next five goals to make it 6-5 after a Lauren Arkell goal at the 10:13 mark.
The momentum went back to the Hawks, who closed the half on a 4-0 run to double up the 'Cats at 10-5 for halftime.
Donato pushed the Hawks' lead to 13-6 with a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the second half. Dial came back for the Wildcats and started the four-goal rally with two goals during the 4-0 run and assisted on the final goal to make it 13-10.
Goalie Delaney Guhman stayed active all afternoon, tying her career-high with 17 saves and added four groundballs.
Sophia Sgroi (10) and Sarah Kopp (7) combined for 17 draw controls. Charley Orner scooped up three groundballs and forced two turnovers, both career bests.
Davidson stays on the road for its next game, facing Richmond, April 12, at 4 p.m.
