RICHMOND, Va. — After scoring the first two goals of the second half, Davidson saw its lead taken away when Richmond countered with a 7-0 run on its way to claiming an 18-11 decision Friday afternoon in Atlantic 10 women's lacrosse at Robins Stadium.
The Wildcats (7-8, 1-6 A-10) had erased an 8-7 deficit at halftime by getting goals from Shayne Antolini and Olivia Carey, with assists coming from Braeden Dial on both scores, for a 9-8 lead and 27:19 on the clock. It was short-lived as the Spiders began a 7-0 run at the 26:49 mark and finished it off at the 18:24 mark for a 15-9 lead, and went on to earn the win.
Richmond improved to 13-2 on the season and 6-1 in league games.
Highlighting the game-changing run for the Spiders was a hat trick from Sam Geiersbach, who went on to pace the offense with five total goals and two assists for seven points. Katie Sciandra also had five goals, two of them during the winning rally.
Madison Ostrick scored three goals and Mia Castagnero had two, while Marissa Brown dished out two assists to go with a goal.
The 'Cats' Sophia Sgroi scored a team-best three goals, while Carey and Sarah Kopp netted two goals each. Carey added two assists for four points. Dial ended the day with three assists to give her a team-leading 22 on the season to go with a team-high 50 points. She is just seven points away from reaching the top-10 in a single season.
Gianna New earned two points on a goal and an assist, while Shannon Blee, Emily Weld and Antolini scored one goal apiece.
Behind three straight goals from Sgroi, Blee and Kopp, Davidson opened the game up 3-0 after the first five minutes. Then, another Sgroi goal at the 21:28 mark followed by Weld's 20th score of the season made it 5-1.
Richmond came back to go on two mini 3-0 runs to overtake the Wildcats at 7-6 with under four minutes to go. Kopp netted her 19th goal to tie things up before the Spiders' Castagnero broke the tie with 28 seconds left in the half for an 8-7 advantage at halftime.
After the Spiders 7-0 spurt in the second half, Davidson would get within four at 15-11 on scores from Carey and Sgroi at 16:44 and 15:51, but it was as close as the 'Cats could get the rest of the way.
Davidson dominated in draw controls at 21-10 thanks to a career-best 16 from Sgroi, who had a previous high of 11 set twice this season.
Richmond had advantages in shots (32-19) and groundballs (29-14), while causing 19 of Davidson's 27 overall turnovers on the day.
Delaney Guhman finished with nine saves in goal, while Charley Orner had three groundballs, and Lauren Arkell and Sgroi scooped up two each.
