'Cats Fall in Regular-Season Finale at VCU, 61-54

RICHMOND, Va.  — VCU used an early 15-0 run in the second quarter and Davidson was forced to play catchup from there on before falling in its regular-season finale on the road, 61-54, in Atlantic 10 women's basketball action inside E.J. Wade Arena.

Davidson concluded the regular season at 16-13 overall and 10-6 in A-10 play, earning the chance to host an A-10 first-round game in the A-10 Championship next Tuesday, March 5 at 7 p.m.

The Wildcats opened with a 13-11 lead after quarter one and were up 15-11 with the first bucket of the second quarter.

VCU then went on its game-changing 15-0 run in a five-minute span to go up 26-15 and would lead by as many as 15 the rest of the game. The Rams' (21-8, 13-3 A-10) win clinched a share of the regular season A-10 title with Fordham.

Sarah Donovan paced the offense with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Justine Lyon dropped in 12 points and also hauled in eight boards. Ally Welling gave the 'Cats three players with eight rebounds and Kelly Fitzgerald scored seven points.

Pacing the Rams were Tera Reed and Taya Robinson with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Reed went 10-for-10 at the charity stripe and VCU was 22-of-32 for the game.

Down by 10 (58-48) with 58 seconds left, Davidson tried to mount one last comeback. It would close the gap to 59-54 and 9.4 seconds remaining after a Fitzgerald running layup and two free throws from Donovan. But, VCU hit two more free throws and the Wildcats turned the ball over on its only possession after the Donovan free throws.

Davidson finished with a 37-35 edge in the rebounding column and hauled in 17 offensive boards, which was the third time in the last four games it had that many. The 'Cats also pocketed 13 steals, a career-high tying four by Kianna Speight, on 17 Ram turnovers.

Leading 31-24 to start the third quarter, VCU would push its lead to 45-30 on a 14-6 run to start the quarter. The Wildcats' defense held the Rams scoreless the remaining 4:44 of the quarter, but were only able to muster five more points of their own for a 45-35 score at the end of the quarter.

GAME NOTES: This was the seventh meeting all-time between both team's women's basketball programs dating back to when the Wildcats joined the A-10 … Davidson is 2-5 in the series … Davidson finished 7-9 on the road this year … Lyon's double-figure scoring game was the 69th of her career, while Donovan recorded her team-leading 25th of the season … Lyon also moved into sixth all-time in scoring (1,355).
