FAIRFAX, Va. – The Davidson 4x800-meter relay smashed the school record, while senior Jacob Hostetler reset a pair of standards in the final day of the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championship at George Mason Field House.
The Wildcats registered 42 total points over the course of the championship weekend. Host George Mason won the meet with 173 points, while Rhode Island (99) and VCU (93.5) rounded out the top three scoring teams.
Anchored by a 1:54 half mile performance from sophomore Daniel Alvarez, the underclassmen relay team of sophomores Alvarez and Taylor Drake and freshmen Bryce Kalsu and Raphael Oettl raced the baton around the track in 7:45.98 to place third. The young 'Cats buried the former standard of 7:56.69 set at the 2015 A-10 Championship.
Alvarez also scored in the 1,000-meter finals, placing sixth with a time of 2:30.27. Both his prelim time (2:29.51) and Sunday's finals mark set school records standards.
Davidson senior standout Jacob Hostetler had another stellar outing on the track. The Seattle, Wash., native broke the 200-meter and 400-meter school records with times of 21.91 and 48.51 seconds, respectively. Hostetler was out-leaned at the line to take silver in the 400m and also took second in the 200m for 16 total points.
"Jacob is the heart and soul of our team. He always brings his best in championship meets," said head coach Renny Walrdon. "What he did today was extraordinary; to walk away with two significantly better personal bests and Davidson school records on the second day of a championship meet is very impressive and says a lot regarding his mental resolve. We are going to miss him dearly next year, but right now we are just glad we have him for one more outdoor season!"
Freshman Colin Ross ended his first collegiate indoor season with another solid performance, taking sixth in the 3,000-meters with a time of 8:35.67, while sophomore Max Higgins placed eighth in the 800-meter run (1:58.22).
The Wildcats wrapped up the championship with an eighth-place result in the 4x400-meter relay. The team of Hostetler, Sean Caveney, Stockton McGuire and Nick Peeples stopped the clock in 3:23.76.
"The team showed a lot of growth at this meet. Our guys brought their best and competed well," said Waldron. "It was great to see our young guys not be intimidated and go out and mix it up. We have a lot to be positive about headed into the outdoor season."
Davidson heads outdoor next with the opening meet on Friday, Mar. 8 on day one of the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
