The Davidson baseball team opens the 2019 campaign Friday night when Towson visits for the first of a three-game set.
First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Wilson Field.
The Wildcats are 68-47 the last two seasons, including 33-21 last year.
Davidson returns its top offensive weapon from last year in senior catcher/infielder Eric Jones, who led the Wildcats in batting average (.333), on-base percentage (.443), hits (67), doubles (14), home runs (11, along with Justin Lebek) and RBI (60). In all, six regular starters return from the team that set a program record with 32 regular season wins last year.
Senior righthander Casey Sutherland is slated as the opening day starter. Sutherland was the team's closer a year ago and flourished with a 2.47 ERA and six saves.
Friday's game will be the first of the Rucker Taylor head coaching era. The 34-year-old has spent the past six seasons as a Davidson assistant, including the last four as associated head coach.
The Wildcats will play their first seven games — including Saturday and Sunday afternoon contests — at home this season and 24 of their first 26 inside the state.
