LEWISBURG, Pa. — Sarah Helen Shepherd set the 200-yard backstroke school record — twice —Sunday to lead the Davidson women's swimming and diving team on the final day of the Bucknell Invitational.
A junior, Shepherd tied the program record last year with a time of 2:01.40. In Sunday's prelims, she claimed the record for herself with a time of 2:00.05. She improved on it with a time of 1:59.65 in the finals and took second place.
The Davidson women placed fourth in the team standings.
"The women were exceedingly impressive this weekend," said Davidson coach John Young. "Theirs is a team that has clearly taken a step forward and not just by the addition of a strong freshman class. We saw fantastic performances from upperclassmen, including Sarah Helen's record-breaking performance today in the 200 backstroke. Siena Senn was great this weekend, Julia Goodhead was great this weekend and we saw a bunch of others' important progress in signature events. If this team can fire on all cylinders in February, they can surprise some people."
Shepherd also moved into second on the program list in the 200 breaststroke with a foruth-place time of 2:17.75.
Freshman Shelby Stanley narrowly missed the school record (Elise Lankiewicz '17) in the 200 butterfly, swimming to second place at the meet with a time of 2:00.52 (0.05 off the record).
Fellow freshmen Selena Nishihata (200 fly, 2:04.43) and Abby Francis (100 free, 51.47) earned fourth-place points, as did the 400 free relay team of Goodhead, Senn, Stanley and Francis (3:25.99).
Hannah Gould finished eighth in the 200 breast (2:23.18).
It will be nearly a month before the Wildcats compete again, as the next meet is set for Jan. 11 at UNCW.
"Now comes the tough stretch of getting through exams and making it to our training camp," said Young, "but I feel good that if we can hold on to some of this weekend's momentum, they'll stay on a good path."
