KINGSTON, R.I. – Top-seeded Rhode Island defeated Davidson, 7-3, in the opening round of the 2019 Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Tournament Saturday evening at URI Soccer Complex.
The Wildcats conclude the campaign 4-11-2 overall, while the Rams advance to next week's semifinals with a 13-3-2 record.
Rhode Island wasted little time grabbing the early advantage as Sondre Karterud put away a Noam Kolakosky feed 1:50 into the match.
After Davidson threatened with three consecutive chances on goal, the Rams extended the margin to 3-0 with goals from Filippo Tamburini and Peder Kristiansen in the 27th and 32nd minutes, respectively.
The Rams' added another goal early in the second half when Charlie Booth headed in a free kick played into the box by Kristiansen.
Two of Davidson's three goals came by way of penalty kicks from Jamie DiLuzio (59') and Ned Morrissett (86'). For DiLuzio, it was his fifth successful try from the spot this season.
In the 85th minute, Mateo Alzate found the back of the net for the Wildcats with a blast from the corner of the 6-yard box.
Rhode Island also got goals from Niklas Middrup (61') and Kolakosky (68').
The Rams finished with a 15-14 edge in shots. Despite the setback, 10 of Davidson's shot attempts were on goal.
