Volleyball Drops A-10 Match to GW

Hattie Rodriguez and Madeline Wynn recorded career-highs in kills Friday night, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats volleyball team fell 3-1 to Atlantic 10 foe George Washington in Belk Arena.

Davidson (9-13, 4-5 A-10) extended the match with a 25-23 win in the third set, but the Colonials (13-11, 6-4) posted a 25-19 win in the fourth to seal it. George Washington won the first two sets 25-19 and 25-23 and held a 16-5 advantage in blocks.

 "We gave away too many points to stay in the match, and we need to control keeping the ball on the court," said Davidson coach Chris Willis. "These are all things we can control. If we do that, I think we can be more successful. George Washington blocked well, and we didn't adjust to what they were doing."

Rodriguez, a sophomore outside hitter, finished with 22 kills. She had kills on four straight Wildcat points in the second set and hit .315 for the match. Her previous career-high was 18 kills against Charlotte in late September.

"Really proud of the way Hattie played today," said Willis. "She took blocks and kept getting kills and swinging aggressively. I thought she played a big-time game."

Wynn, who this week was named A-10 Rookie of the Week for a fourth time, finished with 15 kills and hit .333. Her previous high was 13 against La Salle on Oct. 25.

"Madeline found a way to get kills," said Willis. "We'll hopefully build on those positives going into Sunday."
Setter Sydney Champaigne recorded 50 assists.
