NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Davidson has swept the Atlantic 10 Conference's weekly awards for women's swimming and diving, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
Junior swimmer Sarah Helen Shepherd is A-10 Performer of the Week, while freshman swimmer Abby Francis earned A-10 Rookie of the Week honors.
The honors are based on their performances at home against Georgetown on Saturday.
Shepherd, of Chapel Hill, won three events against the Hoyas, including the 200 individual medley in 2:06.40, which was nearly three seconds faster than the closest competitor. She won the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.09 and the 200 breast in 2:22.53. Her 200 IM and 200 breast times rank fourth in the A-10 so far this season.
"It would be hard to heap too much praise on what Sarah Helen has done for this team," said Davidson coach John Young. "She's been our shining star for two seasons now, and the Wildcats wouldn't be enjoying today's energy and enthusiasm without her. On Saturday, we were able to use her versatility to address a relative weak point against Georgetown, and, as she's done all season, she took care of business in impressive fashion. I'm so happy for her to receive this recognition from the A-10."
Francis, of Wethersfield, Conn., won the 100 freestyle against Georgetown, swimming it in 52.77. She placed second in the 50 free (24.37) and swam the second leg of the Wildcats' victorious 4x50 medley relay (1:47.16). Francis owns the second-best 50 free time in the conference this season and the third-best 100 time.
"What a great honor for Abby," said Young. "She's made us a better dual meet team by stepping up in the sprints, even while training to keep her options open down the line this season. She was a highlight again against Georgetown and is certainly deserving of this award."
Francis is the second Wildcat rookie to be honored this season, following Shelby Stanley (Oct. 22).
The Wildcats are back in action this Saturday with a 12 p.m. meet at Old Dominion.
