NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Fresh off six wins at the two-day Richmond Duals, Davidson freshman swimmer Shelby Stanley has been named Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Rookie of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
Stanley, of Roanoke, Va., swept the 100- and 200- yard butterfly events against both George Mason and Richmond, and also contributed to 200 and 400 medley relay victories.
"Shelby's Davidson career is off to an impressive start, and I'm thrilled for her to be recognized by the A-10," said Davidson coach John Young. "The team had a great weekend, and there were many impressive performances, both from the Wildcat rookies and also from rookie Spiders, Dukes and Patriots. This is a great honor for her — hopefully the first of many."
Stanley's butterfly times against Richmond on Saturday are the top among A-10 freshmen this year. She swam the 100 fly in 56.87, which is third-best in all of the A-10, and swam the 200 fly in 2:05.53, second among all league swimmers.
Stanley and the Wildcats return to action this weekend when they host Georgetown at 12 p.m. in Cannon Pool.
