POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Davidson assistant coach Ryan Mee has been named the head men's basketball coach at Vassar College (DIII) in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., as announced Thursday.
"It is an honor to be named the head men's basketball coach at Vassar College," said Mee. "I'd like to thank Director of Athletics and Physical Education Michelle Walsh and the search committee for trusting me to develop our student-athletes to play an exciting style of basketball that will make the Vassar fans proud."
While on the Wildcats' bench for six seasons, Mee helped Davidson to an impressive 128-69 overall record, 71-29 league mark, three conference regular season titles, a Southern Conference Tournament crown, the program's first-ever Atlantic 10 Tournament title and five postseason appearances – 3 NCAA, 2 NIT.
"Ryan has been a valuable and vital part of our coaching staff and he made a consistently significant impact on our program as we transitioned to the Atlantic 10 Conference," said Davidson head coach Bob McKillop. "He is insightful and analytical with a remarkable ability to communicate and to teach. Players will love playing for him. Colleagues will enjoy working with him. Vassar will be proud of the way he represents excellence to the entire Vassar College community."
A native of Hilton, N.Y., Mee came to Davidson from the University of Rochester, where he spent three seasons as an assistant at his alma mater. The Yellowjackets compiled a record of 53-25 during that time and advanced to the NCAA Division III Sweet Sixteen in 2011, finishing the year as University Athletic Association Conference Champions with a 22-6 mark.
As a student-athlete at Rochester, Mee was a part of the winningest class in Yellowjackets' history with a combined record of 97-17. He played in four consecutive NCAA Tournaments, including two Final Fours (2002, 2005). In Mee's final season, he helped lead Rochester to an appearance in the 2005 National Championship Game.
A 2005 graduate of Rochester with a bachelor's degree in economics, Mee finished his career seventh in 3-pointers made, while serving as a team captain his senior year.
"My experiences at Division III as a player and as a coach helped me understand how incredibly talented these student-athletes are both on and off the court. That well-rounded student athlete is exactly what we are looking for at Vassar," Mee said.
Mee began his coaching career at Hilbert College (2005-06) before moving to Elmira College as an assistant coach for two seasons (2006-08). He served as an assistant varsity coach and head junior varsity coach at Elmira, where he earned a master's degree in education in 2008.
From 2008-09, Mee was an assistant coach at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. where he assisted in all aspects of coaching from recruiting coordinator to practicing planning, to scouting/opponent preparation.
Mee and his wife, Haniya, have two children, Trotter and Capucine.
