TAMPA, Fla. – Four Davidson track and field members will compete at the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round starting Thursday, May 24 at USF Track and Field Stadium on the campus of the University of South Florida.
Representing Davidson on the men's side will be junior's Dylan Carmack and Sean Caveney, while senior Sarah Sears and junior Caroline Yarbrough will lace up their spikes for the women.
"Having four athletes competing at the first round of the NCAA championships is a great boost for our program," said Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Jen Straub. "Every year our goal is to have representation at the outdoor NCAA's and it is an incredible honor to do so! These athletes have worked very hard to achieve this level of success and we are very proud that they are representing Davidson at the highest level."
Caveney will kick it off for the Wildcats on Thursday in the preliminary heat of the 400-meter hurdles. The Andover, Mass., native qualified for the postseason with a new school record time of 52.25 seconds set at the Duke Invitational and won the Atlantic 10 Championship in the event. Caveney made the cut for the second consecutive year after taking fifth in his heat last season at the 2017 East Prelims at the University of Kentucky.
Carmack will toe the line in the 5,000-meter Saturday in his first regional appearance. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native smashed his personal best at the Duke Invitational, stopping the clock in 14:10.65 to qualify. Davidson has had a competitor in the 5k field for three straight seasons (Will Brewster 2016-17). The 'Cats are one of 13 teams to do that and just one of the four from non power-five institutions, joining Iona, Campbell and Oakland.
"Getting to the first round of NCAA's is an important part of the growth process for our team," said men's head coach Renny Waldron. "Sean and Dylan have had tremendous seasons and we are very proud of their success thus far. They will look to continue making progress and competing to the best of their abilities in Tampa."
Both Sears and Yarbrough will follow up Carmack on the track in the women's 5k. The distance duo have been stellar since first stepping into the starting box during the cross country campaign back in September. Sears won the 5k and 10k at the A-10 Outdoor Championship with Yarbrough right behind in both. Yarbrough earned a spot with her program record run of 16:20.70 at the Raleigh Relays, while Sears set a new personal best time of 16:21.59 at the Duke Invitational.
Caveney is slated to kick off the weekend with the prelims of the 400-meter hurdles on Thursday, May 24 at 12:30 p.m. Finals for the event are scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m. Carmack is scheduled to go off on Saturday, May 26 at 8:05 p.m., while Sears and Yarbrough will follow at around 8:45 p.m.
