ORLANDO, Fla. — Davidson registered its first-ever win in the Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Championship when it scored a 4-0 victory against seventh-seeded Saint Louis at the USTA National Campus on Friday afternoon.
The second-seeded Wildcats, who tied last year's win total by moving to 16-6 and won their first match in the all-time series against SLU, will face off against Dayton Saturday at 10 a.m. The Flyers have knocked out the 'Cats the past two years in the tournament.
Things started off with doubles play and Davidson secured the team point by scoring wins at No. 1 and 3 positions. The pair of Yash Parikh and Jack Riazzi picked up their 10th of the season with a 6-4 victory. Then the team of Axel Fries and Artem Khrapko sealed up the point after the Billikens (9-10) won at No. 2 by scoring a 6-3 decision. The duo is a team-best 11-7 on the year.
The winning continued in singles action for the 'Cats, claiming wins at No. 2, 6, 1 and 3 in that order to earn the team win. Senior Shamael Chaudhry continued his impressive final season by moving to a career-best 15-5 after a straight-set 6-2, 6-3 triumph.
Fellow senior Riazzi won his personal-best 14th match in 18 overall after netting a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 6. He is 11-3 on the season at that position.
Rounding out the final team point was senior Khrapko, running his record to 14-8 by taking a 7-6, 6-1 victory at No. 1.
The three singles wins gave Davidson 83 as a team on the season.
