AMHERST, Mass.  —
In its second consecutive down to the wire finish, Davidson fell just short again, this time on the road at Massachusetts 70-68 Saturday afternoon in Atlantic 10 women's basketball inside the Mullins Center.

Tied at 68-all, UMass' Maggie Mulligan hit a layup with 1:05 to go to break the tie and it eventually became the game-winner.

Davidson, which fell in a tough battle at home Wednesday to Saint Joseph's, missed tying it on its next possession with 36 seconds to go, but got the ball back on a defensive steal from Justine Lyon with seven ticks to go. Bringing the ball back down to their end quickly, the 'Cats though lost control near their sideline and turned it over. They were forced to foul after the Minutewomen advanced the ball out of timeout.

There was still one more chance for the Wildcats after UMass missed free throws and a defensive rebound by Sarah Donovan with 1.2 seconds left. Advancing the ball, Davidson drew up one last play and got the ball into Kianna Speight, who from the right wing fired off an off-balance three-pointer that hit the front of the rim as the horn sounded.

For the first time this year, Davidson (10-17, 5-9 A-10) had five players score in double figures. Katie Turner had the hot-hand from three-land, matching her season high for the third time with six triples on 6-of-11 shooting for 18 points.

Mackenzie Latt recorded her seventh double-double of the year on 14 points and 12 rebounds. Lyon finished with 11 points, while Speight and Donovan (eight rebounds) came off the bench for 10 points each.

The Minutewomen (12-15, 4-10 A-10) had three score in double figures, led by Hailey Leidel's 20 points. Mulligan scored 16 to go with 14 rebounds and Paige McCormick hit four three-balls on her way to 12 points. UMass hit 10 three-pointers on the day.

The game featured 14 lead changes and eight times, while both teams scored 20 points each in the paint and hit the 40-rebound mark. UMass had a slight edge on the glass, 42-40, and had 19 offensive rebounds to Davidson's 17.

Davidson fell behind by 10 points (58-48) in the third quarter, with Leidel scoring 12 points in the quarter. The 'Cats closed though with a pair of buckets from Donovan to trail just 58-52 at the end of the quarter.

The first two quarters were tightly played as neither team had a lead larger than six points. There were five lead changes and three ties combined. UMass had a 20-19 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Davidson won the second quarter, 16-14, on its way to a 35-34 halftime edge.

The 'Cats will play their final regular season road game Wednesday, Feb. 21, with a trip to La Salle for a 7 p.m. game.
