CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Davidson women's tennis team got their 2018 Spring season started off by facing No. 5 North Carolina on the road Tuesday evening and came away with a 7-0 defeat at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
It was the highest ranked opponent the Wildcats (0-1) had faced to start a season since they played No. 35 N.C. State in 2012. This was also the first time they opened against UNC since back-to-back seasons in 2005 and 2006.
Davidson faced three ranked singles players and one ranked doubles team from UNC, which moved to 4-0 on the season.
In doubles, the Wildcats dropped 6-0, 5-4 and 6-3 decisions at all three spots, with the No. 1 team of Anna Catharine Feaster and Samantha Armas taking on the 37th ranked team in the nation.
During singles play, Feaster (3-6, 1-6), Megan Scholvinck (2-6, 1-6) and Armas (0-6, 1-6) faced the No. 9, No. 18 and No. 124 players in the nation at No. 1, 2 and 4 positions, respectively.
Alexandra Abele fell 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 to snap her two-match win streak from the end of last season and Ava Todd won three games her first set, 6-3, but lost 6-0 in the second at No. 6.
Davidson returns home to start an eight-match homestand, starting this Saturday, Jan. 27, against Gardner-Webb at 10 a.m.
