DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson regrouped from a season-opening defeat at No. 5 UNC Tuesday by blanking Gardner-Webb 7-0 Saturday morning inside the Knobloch Tennis Center for its first win of the Spring season.
The Wildcats (1-1) moved to 13-1 since 1983 against the Runnin' Bulldogs (0-2), winning their six consecutive home match in the series. It was also the second straight year the 'Cats won their home opener.
Every 'Cat that played Saturday earned their first wins of the campaign. In doubles play, Davidson swept all three positions by the scores of 7-5, 6-1 and 6-0.
After winning in doubles, Anna Catharine Feaster led the charge in singles by scoring a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1. Her teammate at No. 1 doubles, Samatha Armas, needed a second-set tie-breaker win, 10-8, to score a 6-0, 7-6 decision at No. 5.
Megan Scholvinck made it a perfect day too by picking up a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 2, while classmate Gabrielle Centenari pulled out a 7-3 tie-breaker win in the first set and then scored a 6-3 second-set victory at No. 3.
At No. 3, sophomore Alexandra Abele won her 17th career match by taking a 6-2, 6-1 decision.
Freshman Lindsay Song went 2-0 on the day. After teaming up with Ally Sexton at No. 3 doubles, she gave up just four games total in singles play and took a 6-2, 6-2 victory for her first two collegiate wins.
Davidson stays at home to face UNC Asheville next, hosting the Bulldogs, Feb. 2, at 5 p.m.
